Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park

Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park is a new area of woodland located on the edge of Billingham. The site was reclaimed from former brickworks, landfill and ex-agricultural land. Although still in the early stages of growth, rapid development has led to the site's large variety of habitats. This highly attractive park comprises large areas of woodland with over 300,000 trees planted in the 1990s. Today there is little sign of the site’s industrial past and instead it has become a real haven for wildlife.

These include grassland, a lake, a series of ponds and a beck flows around the boundary. The abundant wildlife consists of 80 species of bird with waterfowl, toads, newts and dragonflies in and around the ponds and 18 species of butterfly and hares, foxes and small mammals in the grassland.

The lake is home to Coot, Pochard, Sawn, Grebe and Tufted Duck.

There is an extensive network of footpaths throughout the site including routes up onto two mounds, one of which offers a spectacular panorama with views to the coast and Cleveland Hills. There is a small play area with a fantastic woven willow tunnel. The National Cycle Network Route 14 runs through the middle of the park and provides a direct link to Billingham town centre.

There is a pedestrian entrance off Wolviston Back Lane just to the east of Low Grange, Billingham.
